Muhammad Sharif Hijri (Tehrani)

Biography

Hijri Tehrani, Khwaja Muhammad Sharif (d. 1572 or 1576), son of Luhrasb. A poet with the nom de plume Hijri. He was the father of Mirza Ghiyath Beyg I’timad al-Dawla Tehrani, the grandfather of Nur Jahan Beygum, and an associate of Mawlana Umidi Razi. Originally hailing from Tehran, he grew up in Yazd, hence his appellation Hijri Yazdi. Following the death of his father, Hijri departed for Khurasan and was appointed the vizier of Muhammad Khan Takallu, after whose death, he served as the vizier of his son, Qazzaq Khan. He was well-received by the Safavid Shah Tahmasb and was vested with the governorate of Yazd, Abarqu, and Biyabanak, and then Isfahan, an office which he held till his last days. He was eulogized in qasidas by Salami and Kalami. He died in Isfahan. According to the author of Atashkada-yi Azar, he died in Yazd in 1574. His divan of poetry runs to about 5,000 couplets.
