Pazuki, Jahanbakhsh (1937-)
Violin instrumentalist and composer. He learned music in Isfahan, where he studied with the eminent maestro ‘Abdu’l-Husayn Barazanda. He started his performances on Radio Isfahan around 1952, working in different orchestras accompanied by Hasan Kasa’i and Nahid Da’i-Javad, recordimg programmes that became amongst the most memorable compositions of Persian music of all time. Private programmes were also recorded of his performances on the violin with the singer Taj Isfahani, accompanied by Hasan Kasa’i on Nay. He is a powerful instrumentalist and an exceptionally talented composer, who is brilliant in the fields of classical, folk and pop music. His own works, most of which feature musical scores and lyrics of his own composition, have brought fame to many a vocalist.
However, only a few of his compositions were ever recorded in the Gulha programmes and none of his solo performances are featured therein. In addition to other factors that may have been in play, the composer’s personal preferences to perform non-classical music and his tendency to play in groups and places that offered him more lucrative rewards, should be taken into account. His melodic compositions, which run into several hundreds, were often performed on the Gulha in the final years of the programmes, usually accompanied by the singers Puran and Nahid. Owing to the present very unfavourable circumstances prevailing in Iran in the field of music, since 1980 Jahanbakhsh Pazuki has been residing in the United States, where is active in composing works of Persian popular music.
