Azar-i Khvajavi

Biography

Khajawi, Azar (b. 1929). She was born in Tehran. Her father was in the military. Having completed her secondary education, she embarked on her teaching career at high schools and simultaneously studied Persian Language and Literature proceeding towards her BA. She is a vigorous poet composing ghazals, but she has lived abroad for years. Her poetry, particularly her elegant ghazals, appeared in the cultural periodicals in Tehran, particularly in the Sukhan journal from early in her career. Some of her works have been also published in collections of contemporary poetry. However, she was not content with composing ghazals and she has recently published poetry on the models of Nima and vers blanche in some periodicals published abroad, reflecting her modernist spirit and marvels of her mind. Her first collection of poetry, Wa Aftab Nimidanist (And the sun did not know) was published in Tehran in 2004. The collection includes 56 new ghazals and poems composed on the model of Nima. Together with Furugh Farrukhzad, Simin Danishwar, and Lu’bat Wala, she was among the four distinguished poetesses of modern Iran each of whom trod her own path.
