Pari Badakhshi, a distinguished, contemporary Afghan poetess hailing from Badakhshan. She has composed many a vigorous and elegant poems. The following lines are by her:
The eye not open is better shut rather than see your countenance,
Broken be the hand not grasping your skirt.
Much ado has arisen upon silence,
Seat yourself since the turbulence of resurrection be better settled.
The words not reflecting the agony of love be better concealed,
The sigh arisen in vain is better not heaved.
The soul, connected to the bond of life,
Be better separated if attached to anyone but you.
If you are in sorrow because of me,
May the dispatcher of the message be dead and the pigeon broken-winged.
Pari bears glad tidings of ecstasy tonight,
Come! O pious man! Since the glass of piety better be broken.
