Biography

‘Adili, Shah Isma’il II (1535-1577), son of the Safavid Shah Tahmasb, a poet with the nom de plume ‘Adili. He was a prince with poetical talent, but tyrannical and fearless. As a consequence, his father imprisoned him in the Qahqaha castle for twenty years. He succeeded his father, though his rule was ephemeral. He was well-versed in composing poetry, particularly mathnawi, one of which is his Istikhlasiyya, which he composed in prison showing submission to his father, aspiring that his father may order his release.
