Mu’min Kirmani

Biography

Nur al-Din Muhammad Mu’min, Muhammad Mu’min Kirmani, Muhammad Mu’min ibn ‘Abd Allah Murwarid (d. 1541), son of Khwaja Shihab al-Din ‘Abd Allah Murwarid. A renowned calligrapher and poet with the nom de plume Bayani flourishing under the Safavid Shah Tahmasb. He was the teacher of Abu Nasr Sam Mirza and served as a vizier and royal secretary of the Safavid Shah Isma’il. He had mastery of nasta’liq, ta’liq, and the six calligraphic scripts. He wrote a calligraphic album in different scripts for Shah Tahmasb bearing the dates 1527-1540, folios of which are available at the Tup Kapi Museum and the University of Istanbul. He traveled to India late in life where he died in 1541. He was an indirect student of Yaqut Musta’simi on the side of his father and his teacher, ‘Abd Allah Murwarid and on the other side, he served as a nexus between Persian calligraphers and those of the Gurkanid kings of India.
