DESCRIPTION

Hunar va Mardum was first published on Nawruz 1957 for two issues. The journal began publication again in October 1962, starting with issue number 1, and continued until December 1979, reaching issue number 193.

Hunar va Mardum was published monthly but occasionally bimonthly, and covered cultural topics, Persian poetry and literature, architecture and archaeology, and anthropology, art history, handcrafts, Iranian painting and Persian miniatures, popular culture, the life and customs of Iranian nomads, and the lives of prominent figures such as Abu Riyhan Biruni, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Zakaria Razi.

Some of the most prominent literary, cultural, and artistic figures of Iran, contributed to the journal including Muhammad Ibrahim Bastani Parizi, Muhammad Taqi Binesh, Muhammad Riza Shafi‘i Kadkani, Mihdi Furugh, Isa Bihnam, ‘Ali Bulukbashi, Parviz Varjavand, Ahmad Gulchin Ma‘ani, Kazim Sadat Ishkivari, Nasir Takmil Humayun, Hushang Karimpur, Hasan Naraqi, Nasrin Faqih, Akbar Tajvidi, and others like the American art historian Arthur Upham Pope. Hadi Shafa’iyih covered the art of photography, the history of changes and transformations of the Iranian flag and government emblem were covered by Yahya Zaka', the history of writing in Iran and the rest of the world written by ‘Ali Quli I’itmad Muqaddam, calligraphy topics by Ustad Amir-Khani, introduction to handcrafts by Mihdi Zavara'i, and parables and proverbs Amsal va Hakam written by Mihdi Partu'i Amuli, are among the articles and essays published in this Journal.

‘Inayatu’llah Khujasta and Bizhan Samandar were the editors of the journal, while Sadiq Barirani, and F. Kaziruni were in charge of the design and layout of Hunar va Mardum.

Hunar va Mardum resumed publication in 2003 after a 24-year hiatus. It has continued to be published since then, despite facing various challenges.
